Albino Barrera, O.P. is a Professor of Economics and Theology at Providence College. His most recent publications include Economic Compulsion and Christian Ethics (Cambridge University Press, 2005), God and the Evil of Scarcity: Moral Foundations of Economic Agency (University of Notre Dame Press, 2005), and Globalization and Economic Ethics: Distributive Justice in the Knowledge Economy (Palgrave-MacMillan, 2007). Policymakers are often faced with trade-offs in having to choose either efficiency or equity in running the economy. Contemporary globalization is distinctive because it is driven by the Information Revolution. As a result, nurturing human capital has become even more important. Thus, far from being at odds with each other, efficiency and equity are inseparable and reinforce each other in the emerging knowledge economy.

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy Presents Making Difference: The programs presented in Making Difference follow the principle that one small change can lead to larger influence. With topics ranging from environmental policy to global ethics, the role of music and support for war veterans and their families, this semester's events seek to challenge how each of us, in our own way, can be the change we wish to see in the world.
