Two years ago the Rhode Island Historical Society began working on a project to diversify the narrative of immigrants who came to live and work in northern Rhode Island presented at the Museum of Work & Culture in Woonsocket. With funding from Rhode Island Council for the Humanities RIHS was able to conduct research to record and preserve the oral histories and photos of ten families from previously underrepresented ethnic groups. The results of this project entitled “Going to Work: Twentieth-Century Settlers in the Blackstone Valley,” are being installed as a permanent exhibition at the museum this fall. On Monday September 6th the museum is celebrating the opening of the new exhibit with music, dance performances and free admission from 9:30 to 4:00 p.m.!
