Workshops Announced by the Tracing Center on Histories and Legacies of Slavery

This autumn, the Tracing Center on Histories and Legacies of Slavery will offer four workshops on the role of the North in slavery and how to effectively and sensitively teach this subject matter to students of all backgrounds.

With RICH funding from the 2010 Humanities Grant for Civics Education, the Tracing Center on Histories and Legacies of Slavery is set to host a series of workshops this fall for Rhode Island educators on the role of the North in slavery. The workshop series is aimed at revealing Rhode Island and the surrounding region’s complicity in slavery and the slave trade, as well as providing tools for educators to use to effectively and sensitively teach the subject matter to students of all backgrounds.

All of the workshops are free and open to the public, but space is limited so interested participants should register ahead. The workshops will be held at the following locations and dates:

October 23, 2010: North Kingstown Free Library/Smith’s Castle, N. Kingstown, 9:30am-4:30pm

November 6, 2010:  Aldrich House/John Brown House, RI Historical Society, Providence, 9:30am-4:30pm
