Stars of the Swing Era: From New England to National Fame
The big band era was one of the most exciting periods in American musical history. And many of the finest performers of the day came from New England: Artie Shaw (CT); Charlie Spivak (CT); Randy Brooks (ME); Bobby Hackett (RI); and Mal Hallett (MA). Several of their significant and memorable recordings will be played and discussed. (Dr. Kane’s great-aunt Rosie established the Roseland Ballroom in Taunton, MA, which for many years was considered a major big-band venue.)
Frank Sinatra: Big Band and Early Solo Days
Sinatra has always been popular in Rhode Island. This program focuses on the singer’s debut with the band of Harry James, his tenure with Tommy Dorsey, and his early noteworthy recordings as a solo artist.
Man With A Horn - Cornetist Bobby Hackett
This presentation features the life and music of Rhode Island horn player Bobby Hackett. Included are some samples of Hackett performing at the Milton, MA, Jazz Concert in 1963 (at which speaker Steven Kane was present - applauding with the rest of the audience.) This program does not duplicate material presented in Stars of the Swing Era program.
Dr. Steven M. Kane received his doctorate in Cultural Anthropology from Princeton University. He is a psychotherapist in private practice in Providence and a part-time professor of anthropology at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College. A professional jazz pianist, he is experienced as a jazz educator, record reviewer, and keyboard teacher. He is the founder and director of the Life-Enrichment Center of New England.
