Action Speaks - Oscar Micheaux’s “Within Our Gates”

Oscar Micheaux’s film, “Within Our Gates”

WHERE: Providence Public Library auditorium, 150 Empire Street, Providence, 455-8000, www.provlib.org

Within Our Gates
This 1920 film is one of the earliest surviving examples of a film by African American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux. In the film, an educated negro woman with a shocking past is abandoned by her fiancé and dedicates herself to helping a near bankrupt school for impoverished negro youths. This film is important to African American history because it addresses issues that the mainstream "white" studios ignored.

The AS220 Community forum will be held on Wed., October 15 from 5:30-7:00PM. The radio broadcast will air on Sun., October 19 at 8:00PM on WRNI.

Action Speaks looks at contemporary issues through the lens of history by using "underappreciated" dates of the twentieth-century that have changed America.

Host Marc Joel Levitt moderates weekly conversations between visiting scholars, artists, experts, and audience members. Together they consider the historical moments as a starting point to tease out larger cultural themes and threads – helping us all to better understand our American story.
