SUMMARY:2021 Reading Across Rhode Island Author Event - STAMPED: Racism\, Antiracism\, and You by Jason Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:April 8th Jason Reynolds Reading Across Rhode Island Author Event. Registration will be available on the Rhode Island Center for the Book website in February. \nAbout the book: \nThe #1 New York Times bestselling\, “must-read” (San Francisco Chronicle)\, “amazingly timely and stunningly accessible” (Jacqueline Woodson) exploration of race and racism from award-winning\, beloved authors Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. \nThis is NOT a history book.\nThis is a book about the here and now. \nA book to help us better understand why we are where we are.\nA book about race.  \nThe construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power\, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning reveals the history of racist ideas in America and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now\, shows you why we feel how we feel\, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute\, they can also be discredited. \nThrough a gripping\, fast-paced\, and energizing narrative written by beloved award-winner Jason Reynolds\, this book shines a light on the many insidious forms of racist ideas–and on ways readers can identify and stamp out racist thoughts in their daily lives. -Little\, Brown and Company \nThe Rhode Island Council for the Humanities is a proud sponsor of the 2021 Reading Across Rhode Island season.

She studied in a collaborative program of Brown University with the Universidad de Granada\, Spain and is a Leadership Fellow with the Providence School Department. Currently Mendiburu is teaching Spanish language at Classical High School\, as well as Students Love Travel (Educational Travel to Québec and Puerto Rico) and Johnson and Wales University.  She has been an interpreter for the Rhode Island Supreme Court and has worked at the International Institute of Rhode Island. \n \nMarcela Astudillo has been a professor of the social sciences department in the Providence district since 2002. Astudillo graduated from Rhode Island College with a Masters in Education (2002) and then earned a PhD in Education from the University of Rhode Island in 2017.  She graduated from the school administration program (PRN) – Principal Residency Network in 2017. She began to connect with the poetry of Langston Hughes after taking a reading class at Rhode Island College and then developed that interest in the poetry of this great African-American author to deepen her connections as a teacher\, introducing Langston Hughes to students during Black History Month. Additionally she organizes poetry performances at the spring arts festival at the school. Working with April Brown\, she became a member of the Langston Hughes Community Poetry Reading committee. \n\nThis series is supported in part by a major grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities.
