Toby Gilmore was sold into slavery at age 16. As the only slave to Captain John Gilmore, Toby doubts that he will ever see freedom. Then the town crier brings news that changes everything. In 1776, General George Washington permits Black men to enlist and fight in the American Revolution but, to be eligible they must be the one thing Toby is not: free. Freedom for an enslaved person is a risky pursuit, even for a slave like Toby, living in Taunton MA, far from the more brutal conditions of the southern plantations. Toby Gilmore risks death for the chance to live like any other man: free… and married to the woman he loves.
