Land and Liberation, an art exhibit supporting Movement Education Outdoors

October 8, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Movement Education Outdoors is hosting an art exhibit at the lodge in Saunderstown.

Land and Liberation is an art exhibit connecting the work of climate justice and youth education with art and culture as a resource to imagine better futures and outdoor equity. Outdoor preservation is often tied to practices of colonialism, settlement, and white supremacy, accompanied by images, photographs, and media that are exclusionary and erase the deep relationships that Black, Indigenous, and people of color have with the land and the outdoors, including ancestral practices of land stewardship. We challenge the notion that outdoor experiences only belong to privileged groups. These artworks actively recognize how Black and brown people have long had practices of building community in and with the outdoors. We celebrate and build upon these practices in our path to achieve outdoor equity. And we place images of outdoor BIPOC liberation and joy in our community’s imagination.

Land and Liberation is curated by Shey Rí Acu Rivera Ríos and features the work of Jazzmen Lee Johnson, k. funmilayo aileru, Becci Davis, Edwige Charlot, savonnara sok, Shey Rí Acu Rivera Ríos, and MEO youth.

This exhibition and its public offerings celebrate MEO’s new program site in Saunderstown. We invite BIPOC youth, families, and the general public to experience this land and its history, to learn how they can support its stewardship and to participate in and support MEO programs. Each piece of art created for the exhibit will be available for sale as a limited-edition print, and all funds raised through the sale will go directly towards supporting MEO (50%) and the artists (50%).

Land and Liberation will be shared with the public through a series of three community events:

Sat Oct 8, 1 – 4 pm | Land & Liberation Opening Reception at the MEO Lodge

Sat, Oct 8, time TBD | Haus of Glitter Dance Workshop

Sat Oct 15, 1 – 4 pm | AfroCaribbean Culture Day Event

Directions:
