Andrés Reséndez: The Other Slavery

April 25, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

The John Carter Brown Library invites you to the Maury A. Bromsen Memorial Lecture on Tuesday, April 25, at 5:30 p.m. in the MacMillan Reading Room of the JCB. Andrés Reséndez, professor of history at the University of California, Davis, will discuss The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America. The Other Slavery examines the system of bondage that targeted Native Americans, an expansive system that was every bit as terrible and degrading as African slavery. Anywhere between 2.5 and 5 million Native Americans may have been enslaved throughout the hemisphere in the centuries between the arrival of Columbus and the beginning of the 20th century. In contrast to African slavery which targeted mostly adult males, the majority of these Indian slaves were women and children. The lecture will be followed by a reception and book signing, and copies of The Other Slavery will be available for purchase. The lecture is free and open to the public.
