Building on the themes of our 2016 exhibition, Waterscapes: Islamic Architecture and Art from Doris Duke’s Shangri La, NRF is hosting a symposium on the history of collecting and caring for Islamic art. Guest lecturers will contextualize Doris Duke’s fascination with Islamic art and its ultimate expression in the design of and collections at Shangri La, a site now managed by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. Special attention will also be paid to the challenges of preserving the collections and the building in a tropical, oceanside environment.
Coffee and snacks will be provided; a reception with the presenters will follow.
NRF is excited to feature our colleagues in Honolulu and guest curators as part of the symposium: Sheila Blair, Johnathan Bloom, Konrad Ng, Deborah Pope, Mariah Proctor-Tiffany, Kent Severson.
