One hundred years ago, Empire Street was home to a vibrant Chinatown, with shops, community organizations, subsidized housing, and more. How should we understand their stories, the stories of their descendants, and what it should mean to us today as Asian Americans?
A “relational reconstruction” project which seeks to understand what it might have felt like — personally to walk down Empire Street in 1914. Working from archival photos and maps, I have spent months crafting a virtual reconstruction of the neighborhood. Visit AS220 — only feet away from the site of Chinatown — to see how the process works and where it may lead.
