“Hauntings, Refusals, and Fugitive Moments: Black Life and Everyday Disruptions of Slavery and Empire in Cuba” – Keynote Lecture with Professor Aisha Finch
Atlantic history has been characterized by relentless rebellions, uprisings, and challenges to racial slavery exploited and coerced labor, and colonial rule. The subversion of work in slavery-based and colonial contexts ranged from individual acts of escape and theft to collective actions and uprisings– most dramatically socio-political revolutions. This one-day workshop will examine relationships between slavery, subversion and revolt, and the work of empire across and beyond the Atlantic world.
This event is a part of the Subversion, Slavery, and the Work of Empire Symposium, featuring Aisha Finch, UCLA Associate Professor of African American Studies, Vice Chair, and Associate Professor of Gender Studies.
