“The Sun is Shining” by Tom McGuire featuring Becky Bass as Sissieretta Jones

Stages of Freedom presents Providence actress and vocalist, Becky Bass as the legendary Sissieretta Jones, the nation’s first Black opera superstar who grew up in Providence. “The Sun is Shining” by Tom McGuire is a one-woman show takes you into the life and songs of this leading diva. Thursday and Friday, September 19 and 20 at 6:00 pm at Prospect Terrace, 60 Congdon Street, Providence. Free and open to the public. Made possible by the City of Providence, Art, Culture and Tourism, Parks Department and The Ely Fund Neighborhood Performing Arts Series.

The highest paid Black performer of her day, Sissieretta Jones toured the world, sang for heads of state, four US presidents, and formed her own Vaudeville company. Prospect Terrace, the City’s premier East Side park, is a block from the house Ms. Jones grew up in, the church she sang in, and the home she retired to where she tended her rose garden. The piece, entitled “The Sun is Shining,” was written by the late Tom McGuire and directed by Robb Dimmick.
