This is America – Civil Rights Movement Initiative: A Bright to Understanding our Present

February 11, 2021 @ 4:15 pm - 5:45 pm

Free

Created in 2015, the Civil Rights Movement Initiative (CRMI) is an after school program that serves students from three Providence public high schools. This program offers students exposure to a rigorous, pre-college level curriculum and immersive weeklong trip that centers the history of the Civil Rights Movement through Black grassroots organizing and collective resistance. With the tagline, “Looking Back to Understand the Present,” CRMI serves as an opportunity for students to grapple with this history and encourage them to interrogate systems of domination and how these legacies continue to shape their lived experiences. Please join us for a conversation with three alumni of the program as they reflect on their experiences in the program and how they are using the history of the Civil Rights Movement to think about this current moment in history.

Panelist include:

Hafzat Akanni, 2016 Cohort

Deyreni Ferreras, 2017 Cohort

Mohamadou Mbaye, 2018 Cohort
