Women in Ledger Art

April 23, 2015 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

In the 19th century Plains Indian warriors told stories of their heroic deeds by drawing them on pages of a ledger book. In the last forty years this form has been adapted by Native women artists to tell stories of women’s lives of the past and present. Author Richard Pearce explores the history of this new form in his book Women and Ledger Art: Four Contemporary Native American Artists. In this program he will be joined in discussion by scholar Barbara A. Hail (Curator Emerita of the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology) and guest artist Dolores Purdy Corcoran (Caddo), one of the four artists featured in his book. Sponsored by the Friends of the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology.
