Join us on September 13 at the Hera Gallery in Wakefield, RI for a free introduction to the Rhode Tour mobile phone application. Dr. Sandra Enos will discuss her tour, Orphanages, Asylums and Almshouses, based on research on the history of Rhode Island’s places for its poor, vulnerable, delinquent, hearing impaired and disabled citizens. Utilizing compelling images and stories, this digital technology allows researchers, story-tellers and people who love our state’s places and people an engaging platform to share these resources.

HONORING OUR COMMUNITY LEADERS & INNOVATORS

On Thursday, October 9, 2014 the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities will honor Morris Nathanson, interior designer, artist, and civic visionary, Holly Ewald, founder of the Urban Pond Procession, Vartan Gregorian Elementary School PTO’s I WAS THERE Project, and John McNiff, Park Ranger at Roger Williams National Memorial, at the 2014 Celebration of the Humanities.

As executive director, Elizabeth Francis promotes civic engagement, culture, and history for the Council. Appointed in 2013 to the board of what is now the R.I. Commerce Corporation, Francis co-authored a strategic plan for Rhode Island’s creative and cultural economy. She discusses with the Providence Business Journal how the humanities can be an economic driver in Rhode Island.

PSU RECEIVES BEST PRACTICES AWARD

Council grantee, The Providence Student Union (PSU), received an Advocacy Award from the Rhode Island Foundation this month for its public policy advocacy effort to increase the number of students who qualify for free bus service to and from school.
